Keeping Compressed Air Clean: Housings and Filter Elements

Inline compressed air filters protect valves, cylinders and processes from oil, water and particles. Here is how to choose and maintain them.

Keeping Compressed Air Clean: Housings and Filter Elements

Compressed air carries water, oil aerosols and particles from the compressor and the pipework. Inline filters remove these contaminants before they reach pneumatic equipment, instruments and processes.

The housing

The filter housing must suit the system pressure, temperature and flow rate. An undersized housing creates a high pressure drop and wastes energy. Housings should allow quick, safe element changes and include a reliable drain.

The element

Different elements do different jobs: coarse elements remove bulk water and large particles, coalescing elements remove oil aerosols, and activated carbon elements remove oil vapour and odours. They are usually installed in series, coarsest first.

Maintenance

  • Check differential pressure regularly
  • Replace elements at least as often as recommended
  • Make sure drains are working
  • Use genuine-fit elements that seal properly

Clean, dry air is particularly important for pulse-jet dust collectors and pneumatic conveying systems. SP&DE can advise on compressed air treatment as part of your project.
